The Art of the Made Bed: Hotel Housekeeping Techniques for Home

A beautifully made bed transforms a bedroom. The world's finest hotels have developed techniques refined over decades β€” and every one of them can be mastered at home.

There is a reason that check-in to a great hotel room produces an immediate, visceral sense of relaxation. The room has been prepared with a precision and intentionality that the domestic environment rarely achieves. The bed β€” invariably made with a perfection that seems almost impossible to recreate at home β€” is the centrepiece of this effect.

The good news: every technique used by the housekeeping teams of the world's finest hotels can be mastered at home. It requires no special equipment. It requires only the correct method, applied consistently.

**The Foundation: The Mattress**

All bed-making begins with the mattress. A quality mattress protector (waterproof but breathable β€” Saatva (saatva.com) and Casper (casper.com) both produce excellent options) should be fitted first and washed monthly. The mattress itself should be rotated (not flipped, unless it's double-sided) every three months. The finest hotels use mattresses from Hastens (hastens.com) β€” the Swedish horsehair mattress maker by Royal Appointment since 1863 β€” or Hypnos (hypnosbeds.com), the official mattress supplier to Buckingham Palace and Royal warrants holder.

**The Sheet Layer**

*Fitted sheet*: Pull completely taut before tucking. Smooth from the centre outward. No wrinkling should be visible from above.

*Flat sheet*: Place right-side down on the mattress (so that when folded back, the right side is visible). Leave 12–16 inches excess at the pillow end for the fold-back. Tuck at the foot of the bed using the 'hospital corner' method: lift the side overhang at a 45-degree angle, tuck the lower portion under the mattress, then bring the raised portion down and tuck. The corners should be perfectly mitered β€” no fabric bunching.

**The Duvet/Comforter Layer**

The finest hotel look uses an all-white duvet with a white cotton duvet cover (no pattern β€” pattern immediately reads as domestic rather than hotel). Centre the duvet precisely β€” equal overhang on both sides. Fold the top edge back 10–12 inches. The fold should be straight, perfectly horizontal, and pressed flat with your hand.

**The Pillow Architecture**

Standard hotel pillow configuration for a queen bed: two sleeping pillows in white cases, positioned flat against the headboard; two European shams in front of them, standing upright; two decorative accent pillows in front of those; one bolster or lumbar pillow at the front. For a king: increase by one European sham pair. The key is ensuring all pillow covers are wrinkle-free β€” iron or steam immediately after laundering.

**The Throw**

A folded throw at the foot of the bed (cashmere, merino, or a fine cotton waffle weave) provides both warmth and visual weight that balances the lightness of the white bedding. Fold in thirds lengthwise and then in half β€” place with the fold facing the headboard.

**The Morning Ritual**

Five minutes, every morning: pull back the covers to air the mattress and sheets for at least 30 minutes before making (this measurably reduces dust mite populations). Fit the sheets, tuck the hospital corners, centre the duvet, build the pillow arrangement, set the throw. The investment is small; the effect on the bedroom β€” and by extension on the quality of the evening return to it β€” is considerable.

**The Secret Weapon**

A fabric steamer (Rowenta DG8520 Professional Steamer is the hotel-grade standard) removes wrinkles from sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers in seconds, without the effort or risk of ironing. Every serious hotel housekeeper uses one, and it is the single most effective purchase for achieving a hotel-quality bedroom at home.
