The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Cleveland's Cathedral of American Music

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was established on April 20, 1983, by Ahmet Ertegun, the founder and chairman of Atlantic Records, who assembled a team that included Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner and record executives Seymour Stein and Bob Krasnow. Robert Johnson, Jimmie Rodgers, and Jimmy Yancey were inducted as Early Influences; John Hammond received the Lifetime Achievement Award; and Alan Freed and Sam Phillips were inducted as Non-Performers. Since 1986, the Hall has inducted new members each year, expanding beyond performers to include songwriters, producers, sidemen, and, in later years, the broader genres — rap, hip-hop, R&B — that rock and roll absorbed and inspired.

**The Building and the Collection**

Pei's building is itself a draw — a dramatic composition of geometric glass forms on the downtown lakefront, the tower and pyramid echoing the energy and ambition of the music it celebrates. Inside, the museum's exhibits trace the history of rock and roll from its roots in blues, gospel, and country through the golden age of the 1950s and 60s, the album era, and into punk, metal, and hip-hop. The collection includes instruments (Chuck Berry's guitar, John Lennon's piano, Michael Jackson's rhinestone glove), stage costumes (from the Beatles to Lady Gaga), handwritten lyrics, and archival recordings.
