Sydney: Harbour Bridge, Opera House & the Art of Australian Luxury
Sydney — the largest city in Australia and one of the most beautiful harbours in the world — combines the urban sophistication of a global city with the natural beauty of its famous harbour. From the Park Hyatt beneath the Harbour Bridge to the Opera House at Bennelong Point, this is the definitive luxury guide to Sydney.
Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia, with a metropolitan population of over 5 million. It is built around one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world — Port Jackson, commonly known as Sydney Harbour — and is defined by two of the most iconic structures of the 20th century: the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The area now known as Sydney has been inhabited by Aboriginal peoples for at least 30,000 years. The modern city was founded on 26 January 1788, when the First Fleet under Captain Arthur Phillip arrived at Sydney Cove to establish a British penal colony — the first European settlement in Australia. The city grew to become Australia's largest and the financial and cultural centre of the country.
The Sydney Opera House
The Sydney Opera House, designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, is one of the most famous buildings of the 20th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed in 2007). Utzon won the international design competition in 1957 and construction began in 1959, but the project was plagued by cost overruns and political conflict, and Utzon resigned from the project in 1966. The building was completed in 1973 at a final cost of A$102 million (more than ten times the original estimate). Despite the fraught construction, the Opera House is now recognised as a masterpiece of modern architecture, with its distinctive sail-like concrete shells clad in ceramic tiles. The Sydney Harbour Bridge
The Sydney Harbour Bridge, affectionately known as 'the Coathanger' for its arch shape, was opened in 1932 after nine years of construction. With a total length of 1,149 metres and an arch span of 503 metres, it was the widest long-span bridge in the world at the time of its completion. The BridgeClimb experience (bridgeclimb.com), which allows visitors to climb to the summit of the bridge arch, has operated since 1998. Reference: [BridgeClimb Sydney](https://www.bridgeclimb.com)
Where to Stay
Park Hyatt Sydney (hyatt.com) is the finest hotel in Australia — positioned directly beneath the Harbour Bridge on the western side of the Circular Quay, facing the Sydney Opera House across the water, in the historic Rocks district. The hotel opened in 1990 and was substantially renovated in 2012. Its suites offer some of the most spectacular harbour and Opera House views of any hotel in the world. The Rocks
The Rocks is the historic neighbourhood on the southern shore of Sydney Harbour, where the original 1788 settlement was established. Today it is a preserved district of sandstone buildings, cobbled lanes, weekend markets, and some of the oldest pubs in Australia, including the Hero of Waterloo (1843) and the Fortune of War (1928). The Beaches
Bondi Beach, about 7 kilometres east of the city centre, is the most famous beach in Australia. The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk — a 6-kilometre cliff-top walk past Tamarama, Bronte, and Coogee beaches — is one of the finest urban coastal walks in the world.
Getting There
Sydney is served by Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD), the busiest airport in Australia, located about 8 kilometres south of the city centre. The Airport Link train (airportlink.com.au) connects the airport to Central Station in about 13 minutes. Sydney is connected by long-haul flights to all major global cities; Qantas (qantas.com) is the flag carrier.
