Santa Fe, New Mexico: Adobe Architecture, Canyon Road & the Art of Southwestern Culture
The oldest and highest capital in the United States, founded in 1610, Santa Fe is a city of adobe walls, Pueblo heritage, the galleries of Canyon Road, Meow Wolf's immersive art, and the Santa Fe Opera โ the cultural crown of the American Southwest.
Santa Fe, New Mexico is the highest and oldest capital city in the United States, a place where Pueblo Indian heritage, Spanish colonial history, and a contemporary art scene of remarkable sophistication meet at 7,199 feet in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Founded in 1610 by Spanish governor Don Pedro de Peralta, Santa Fe is not only the seat of the oldest government in the contiguous United States โ it is, by many measures, the most culturally layered city in North America.
The Oldest Capital
Santa Fe predates the founding of the United States by 166 years. Don Pedro de Peralta established it as the capital of the Spanish Kingdom of New Mexico, making it the oldest capital city in what is now the United States, and the Palace of the Governors โ built that same year, 1610 โ is the oldest continuously occupied public building in the country. For centuries it served as the seat of Spanish, then Mexican, then American territorial government. Today its long portico fronting the Santa Fe Plaza shelters Native American artisans who sell turquoise, pottery, and jewelry under the Portal Program, a tradition maintained since the 1930s.
The city's defining architectural style is Pueblo Revival โ adobe walls of earth and straw, rounded corners, flat roofs supported by vigas (heavy wooden beams), and kiva fireplaces. This style, codified in the 1912 city plan, gives Santa Fe a visual unity found in no other American city. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, built between 1869 and 1886 by Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy, rises in Romanesque contrast to the adobe, its stone spires a landmark visible across the valley.
Canyon Road and the Art World
Santa Fe is one of the great art markets of the world, ranked among the top destinations globally for art collectors. The heart of this is Canyon Road, a half-mile stretch of historic adobe homes converted into more than 100 galleries, studios, and boutiques. What was once a residential lane of modest adobe cottages became, from the 1920s onward, the gathering place for the artists of the Santa Fe colony and the Taos Society, drawn to the quality of light and the cultural richness of the region.
The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, dedicated to the artist who made northern New Mexico her home from 1929 until her death in 1986, holds the world's largest collection of her work. SITE Santa Fe, a contemporary art space founded in 1995, presents international exhibitions in the Railyard District.
And then there is Meow Wolf, the most extraordinary art installation in the American West. Founded in 2008 by a collective of Santa Fe artists, Meow Wolf's House of Eternal Return โ a 20,000-square-foot immersive art environment inside a former bowling alley, funded in part by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin โ opened in 2015 and became one of the most visited cultural attractions in New Mexico. Its non-linear, walk-through narrative of a Victorian house whose rooms open into fantastical dimensions redefined what an art experience could be.
The Santa Fe Opera and Cultural Depth
The Santa Fe Opera, founded in 1957 by John O'Hea Crosby, is one of the world's great opera companies. Its open-air Crosby Theatre, rebuilt in 1998 after a fire, sits on a mesa north of the city with views of the Jemez Mountains, and its season (late June through August) draws opera lovers from around the world. It has premiered more than a dozen new American operas and is famed for its apprentice program, which has trained generations of singers and technicians.
The Museum of New Mexico system operates four museums in or near the Plaza, including the Museum of International Folk Art, which holds the world's largest collection of folk art with over 130,000 objects. The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, founded in 1937, is the oldest non-profit independent museum in New Mexico.
The High-Desert Table
Santa Fe's cuisine is a distinct regional tradition โ the fusion of Pueblo corn, beans, and chile with Spanish and Mexican techniques. Red and green chile are the defining ingredients; ordering 'Christmas' means both. The city's most iconic dish is the green chile cheeseburger, found everywhere from the Shake Foundation to the restaurants along Old Santa Fe Trail. For fine dining, Geronimo, in a 1756 adobe on Canyon Road, has long been the standard-bearer, while Sazรณn offers Oaxacan-influenced Mexican.
