The Night Watch. The Milkmaid. Eight thousand objects spanning seven hundred years. Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum is among the world's great museums โ€” and it is more navigable than you think.

The Rijksmuseum โ€” the National Museum of the Netherlands โ€” is the definitive repository of Dutch art and history, and one of the most rewarding art museums in the world. Unlike the Louvre or the Met, which demand days to do any justice to, the Rijksmuseum is compact enough to experience meaningfully in a focused half-day, yet deep enough to occupy a lifetime of return visits. Its permanent collection of 8,000 objects spans seven centuries of Dutch and Flemish art and decorative arts, and the quality of the first-tier works is without parallel: the Dutch Golden Age (roughly 1600โ€“1700) was one of the most astonishing flowering of artistic talent in history, and the Rijksmuseum holds its greatest works.

**History and Architecture**

The museum was founded in The Hague in 1800 and moved to Amsterdam in 1808 under Louis Napoleon. Its current home โ€” the enormous Gothic/Renaissance brick palace designed by P.J.H. Cuypers, opened in 1885 โ€” is one of the finest museum buildings in Europe. The building underwent a ten-year renovation completed in 2013, reopening with a reconfigured interior designed by Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos that dramatically improved the visitor experience while restoring the building's historic character. Tickets and information at rijksmuseum.nl.

**The Gallery of Honour**

The heart of the Rijksmuseum is the Gallery of Honour โ€” a barrel-vaulted axial hall that functions as the museum's spine, lined with masterpieces of the Dutch Golden Age and culminating in the Nightwatch Gallery. This architecture is intentional: the Gallery of Honour was designed to create a processional experience toward Rembrandt's greatest work.

*The Night Watch* (1642): Rembrandt's militia company portrait is the most famous painting in the Netherlands and one of the most famous in the world โ€” but it rewards revisiting beyond its reputation. At 363 ร— 172 in, it is enormous. The depiction of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq and his lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch leading a company of guards is remarkable for its dynamism โ€” these are people in motion, lit by a dramatic chiaroscuro that was revolutionary in portrait painting. The figures in the background are as individual and psychologically distinct as the principals. Allow twenty minutes with this painting. Reference: rijksmuseum.nl/en/masterpieces/the-night-watch

*The Milkmaid* (c.1657โ€“58) by Johannes Vermeer: Perhaps the greatest of Vermeer's 37 surviving works. A kitchen maid pouring milk with absolute concentration, in a small room lit from the left. The light, the silence, the precision โ€” it is one of the most complete and perfect paintings in the Dutch tradition. Vermeer's canvases are rarely larger than a book; *The Milkmaid* is 45.5 ร— 16 โ…› in. Its scale makes its presence all the more intimate.

Other masterworks to seek: *The Merry Drinker* by Frans Hals; Pieter de Hooch's *Woman with a Child in a Pantry*; the extraordinary Still Life paintings of Willem Claesz. Heda and Jan Davidsz. de Heem โ€” Dutch still life painting at its most obsessive and precise.

**The Rijksmuseum Gardens**

The museum's exterior gardens, redesigned in 2013, are free to access and contain sculptures and a rose garden. The central archway through the building's ground floor โ€” which the museum deliberately left open as a public thoroughfare, as it had been for over a century โ€” is lined with ornate tiles and is one of the most beautiful covered passages in Amsterdam.

**Practical Advice**

Purchase timed entry tickets in advance at rijksmuseum.nl โ€” standard admission is โ‚ฌ22.50. The museum is open daily 9amโ€“5pm. Arrive at opening to experience the Gallery of Honour and Night Watch Gallery in relative tranquillity. The museum's Cafรฉ and Restaurant in the restored main hall is a genuinely good dining option. The Rijksmuseum is a five-minute walk from the Van Gogh Museum (vangoghmuseum.nl) and the Stedelijk Museum (stedelijk.nl), making Amsterdam's Museum Quarter one of the finest concentrations of art institutions in Europe.
