Garden Party Season: Hosting Outdoors in Style
When the weather turns warm, the most sophisticated parties move outside. A guide to effortless alfresco entertaining.
There is something irreducibly joyful about a garden party β the particular quality of afternoon light through a floral arrangement, the sound of glasses clinking against birdsong, the freedom of a table that spills generously into open space.
Setting the scene begins weeks before the party. If you have a garden, consider what's in bloom β cut flowers from your own garden carry an intimacy that shop-bought arrangements rarely achieve. If you don't, Bloom & Wild (bloomandwild.com) and local flower markets are excellent sources for seasonal stems.
For seating, resist the impulse to confine guests to a single long table. Create clusters β a low table with cushions here, a swing seat there, a bar cart in the shade β that allow guests to drift and mingle. The best garden parties have a quality of discovery: there's always another corner to explore.
The drinks station is the anchor. A large galvanised tub of ice holding multiple bottles of Champagne, Cava, and sparkling water, alongside a row of fresh juices for building mimosas, is both functional and beautiful. Add a handwritten card suggesting two signature combinations β perhaps Mimosavated's Tropical Mango Mimosa and the RosΓ© & Raspberry β so guests feel inspired rather than instructed.
For shade, vintage parasols or a simple linen canopy create shelter without sacrificing the garden aesthetic. Habitat (habitat.co.uk) and Terrain (shopterrain.com) both offer beautiful options. As evening falls, string lights and garden lanterns extend the magic hours well beyond sunset.
