Art Basel: The Art World's Most Important Fair and the City That Became the Art Capital

Art Basel (artbasel.com) is the most important art fair in the world and one of the most influential cultural events in the global contemporary art market. Founded in Basel, Switzerland, in 1970 by three Basel gallerists — Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner, and Balz Hilt — the fair launched with 90 galleries and 16,000 visitors and has since grown into a global art-world institution with four annual editions on three continents. Art Basel is now owned by the MCH Group, a Swiss listed company.

The Founders

Ernst Beyeler (1921–2010) was one of the most important art dealers of the 20th century. He founded the Galerie Beyeler in Basel in 1948 and, over the following decades, built one of the world's finest collections of modern art, much of which is now housed in the Fondation Beyeler (fondationbeyeler.ch), a museum designed by Renzo Piano and opened in 1997 in Riehen, near Basel. The Editions

**Art Basel in Basel** (June) — the original and still the most prestigious edition, held at the Messe Basel exhibition centre. The fair presents approximately 285 of the world's leading galleries, drawn from over 4,000 applicants, showing the work of over 4,000 artists. The fair is organised into sectors: Galleries (the main section), Feature (curated projects), Statements (emerging solo artists), Unlimited (large-scale works), Parcours (site-specific works in the city), and Film. **Art Basel in Miami Beach** (December) — launched in 2002, this edition is held at the Miami Beach Convention Center and has become the most important art event in the Americas. It coincides with a constellation of satellite fairs — including Design Miami, Untitled, NADA, and Pulse — that together transform Miami Beach into the centre of the art world for one week each December. The fair's impact on the host cities is also significant: Art Basel in Miami Beach is credited with catalysing the transformation of Miami from a tourist destination into a major cultural centre, with the subsequent development of the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, and the Wynwood Arts District.

Art Basel's public days are typically Thursday through Saturday, with preview days (accessible to VIP cardholders and press) on Tuesday and Wednesday. Day tickets cost approximately CHF 50–60.
